Charles Ray Pope: Early Life and Career

Charles Ray Pope was born on June 25, 1936, in Johnston County, North Carolina, the fourth child and third son of Clarence and Agnes Stancil Pope. He grew up alongside his four siblings: his older sister Mary Frances Pope Johnson, his brothers Raymond Eugene "Gene" Pope, Marshall Barnes Pope, and his younger brother Henry "Speck" Claiborne Pope.

In his professional life, Charles worked diligently for local companies, including Blue Flame Gas Company and Watson Gas & Oil Company. Beyond his work, Charles had a great enthusiasm for car racing, a hobby that brought excitement to his life.

Betty Lou Hare Pope: Early Life and Dedicated Service

Betty Lou Hare was born on August 23, 1937, in North Carolina, the daughter of Fred and Dorothy Bass Hare. She pursued higher education, graduating from Atlantic Christian College, which prepared her for a distinguished career in education.

Betty Lou dedicated 32 years of her life to teaching in the Johnston County Schools, shaping countless young minds. Her devotion extended to her church, Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, where she faithfully played the piano and organ for an incredible 67 years. Betty Lou also possessed a strong love for travel, visiting all 50 states, exploring seven European countries, journeying through Central America, and enjoying numerous cruises and bus trips.

Their Shared Journey: Marriage and Family

Charles and Betty Lou united in marriage on September 6, 1953, in Kenly, Johnston County, North Carolina. Their loving union lasted for 45 years, a testament to their enduring commitment to one another.

Together, they raised three children:

  • Elizabeth "Libby" Pope (born 1954)
  • Frances Annette Pope (born 1956)
  • Myra Dawn Pope (born 1966)

They took immense pride in their grandchildren: Cathi Pope, Will Patterson, Thad Bridgers, and Anna Grace Bridgers, and delighted in their great-granddaughter, Kaycee Roberson.

Charles's Health Challenges and Passing

In his later years, Charles developed serious heart problems. Despite undergoing a heart transplant two years before his passing, he was never able to fully recover.

Charles Ray Pope passed away at the age of 62 on July 27, 1998, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He was laid to rest in the Dixon Family Cemetery off Piney Grove Church Road in Kenly.

Betty Lou's Later Years and Legacy

After Charles's passing, Betty Lou continued to live a life rich with faith, travel, and the love of her family. She passed away on March 23, 2019, and was buried beside her beloved Charles Ray Pope in the Dixon Family Cemetery, reuniting them in eternal rest.
