Essay on Ed Wallace by son Bill Wallace

Here is an essay written by Bill Wallace, a driver at Langley Speedway. It won a
contest naming his father Ed Wallace, husband of Irene Pittman, Langley's No. 1 Dad.

My Dad, Ed Wallace, should be Langley's number one dad for many reasons, but mainly because, at the age of 58, I still look up to him like I did when I was a kid. I started racing back in 2003 at the ripe old age of 53. Racing in first U-cars and now Super Trucks, I always know that when I pass by the grandstands my 87 year old Dad will be sitting there with my Mom, cheering me on.

Dad, or Daddy as I still call him, served in WWII as a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot. Shot down over Germany after 18 missions, he spent 13 months in a POW camp. Despite his reluctance to talk much about his time in the war or how it affected him, he’s lived his life in a way that today still makes me want to be half the man he is.

No matter what my fortunes are on the track, he’s always up there watching and cheering. No matter where I finish, in his eyes I’m the best driver out there. In my eyes, he's the best Dad anywhere.
