Annie Laurie Stancil, the third child of Elbert and Annie Viola Renfrow Stancil, was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Wilson, North Carolina.

Cousin Glenn Stancil recalls she was a very pretty girl.

Annie Laurie met William Henry Jones when he returned from World War II. Henry was born Sept. 30, 1920, in Norfolk, Virginia.

Henry enlisted in the Army on June 12, 1942. He enlisted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was living in Beaufort County, North Carolina.

He had completed grammar school. Henry indicated he was a chauffeur in his civilian life. His enlistment was dated as six months after the end of the war.

Laurie married William Henry Jones on March 30, 1940, in Princess Anne, Virginia. They had four children: Richard Garland "Dickie," Gayle, Danny and Patricia "Pat."

They moved to Florida and then Virginia.

Annie was a clerk at Smith & Welton department store. She was a member of Coleman Place Presbyterian Church in Norfolk, Virginia.

William Henry Jones was a longshoreman and worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

William Henry died on December 13, 1988, in Hampton, Virginia.

Annie Laurie died in July 12, 1992 in Glen Burnie, Maryland. She is buried at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk, Virginia.

Richard Garland Jones died at 76 on Nov. 24, 2017, in Virginia Beach. He was a longshoreman, and owner of DT Bradleys in Farmville, Virginia.

Richard is the father of Richard Garland Jones Jr., who died in 1992.

Patricia Ann Jones Hardison died at 73 on Oct. 24, 2018, in Norfolk, Virginia. She marched on Washington and helped reform child support laws.

Annie L. Jones dies at 68

NORFOLK - Annie Laurie Jones, 68, a retired clerk, died July 14, 1992, in Glen Burnie, Md.

Mrs. Jones was born in Wilson County, N.C. She had retired from Smith & Welton Department Store, Norfolk, VA, after eight years. She was the widow of William Henry Jones and was a member of Coleman Place Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, VA.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hardison of Norfolk and Gail Ellis of Virginia Beach; two sons, Richard G. Jones of Farmville and William D. Jones of Baltimore; two sisters, Shelia Davis of Wilmington, N.C., and Thelma L. Pipkin of Newport News; four brothers, Durwood Stancil of Wilson, N.C., J.E. Stancil and Wayne Stancil, both of Wilmington, and Dick Stancil of Florida; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Larry Miles. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
