Jesman Arnold Hales was born on November 4, 1940, in the small town of Fremont, North Carolina. He was the son of Jesmon Cedric Hales and Hilda Maie Stancil Hales Stover. Growing up in a close-knit community, Jesman, known affectionately as “Jes,” developed a strong sense of family and duty. He had a sister, Mary Ann Hales Weisiger, with whom he shared a deep bond.
Jes’s journey into the military began in 1963 when he joined the United States Air Force. His dedication and skill quickly became evident, and he rose through the ranks to become an officer. Jes served as a pilot and Air-Crew Commander, a role that took him to the skies over Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. From 1967 to 1973, he completed seven Temporary Duty tours, spending a total of 865 days in the region. His bravery and leadership earned him the respect of his peers and superiors.
After his active service, Jes continued to contribute to the Air Force as a B-52 instructor pilot. His passion for teaching and mentoring young pilots was evident during his tenure as a faculty member at the Air Command and Staff College from 1976 to 1980. Jes’s commitment to excellence and his ability to inspire others left a lasting impact on the next generation of Air Force officers. After 21 years, Jes retired with numerous honors (including the Distinguished Flying Cross). Following his military service, he worked as an award winning and top producing realtor and broker for many years.
Jes married Betsy Jean Lane, and together they built a loving family. They had three children: Jeff, Jessica, and Joseph. Jes was a devoted father and grandfather, cherishing his time with his grandchildren, Ashley Hales Hamilton and Lauren Hales Boutwell. His family remembers him as a man of integrity, kindness, and unwavering dedication.
Jesman Arnold Hales passed away on April 10, 2024, in Prattville, Alabama, at the age of 83. He was laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont, North Carolina, alongside his parents. His legacy lives on through his family and the countless lives he touched during his distinguished career.
Jesman Arnold Hales’s story is one of service, dedication, and love—a testament to a life well-lived and a legacy that will endure for generations.
