Michael Shayne Poythress was born on November 7, 1980, in Wilson, North Carolina. He was the son of Michael Wayne Poythress and Flora Jean Stancil. Shayne was a grandson of Bill Poythress and the late Glenda Poythress on his paternal side, and the late Josiah Fernie and Doris Stancil on his maternal side. His lineage also connected him as a great-grandson of Freeman Elbert Stancil and a great-great-grandson of Samuel Stancil.
Shayne grew up in Wilson, North Carolina, maintaining close ties with his extended family. He was the brother of Tracey Duke and Nancy Spivey.

Shayne was characterized by his kind heart and a zest for life. He found joy in simple pleasures, particularly loving trips to the beach, with Carolina Beach holding a special place in his memories. At the time of his passing, he was looking forward to getting married to his fiancée, Crystal Simmons of Wilmington, North Carolina. Above all, Shayne's greatest love was for his family, including his sisters, Tracey Duke, and husband, Chad; and Nancy Spivey of Atlanta.
He was a proud father to his daughter, Alexis Re Ann Thompson, of Elm City, North Carolina.

Michael Shayne Poythress passed away tragically and unexpectedly on Sunday, February 13, 2011, at the age of 30, in New Hanover, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Josiah Fernie and Doris Stancil, and his paternal grandmother, Glenda Poythress.
