Walter Leo Stancil was born on March 12, 1931, in Johnston County, North Carolina, the eldest son of Walter Greene Stancil and Louise Wallace Stancil. He was one of three children born to Walter Greene and Louise, though his sisters, Frances and Jewel, both died young. From his father's previous marriage to Dillie Renfrow Stancil, Walter Leo had half-siblings Louis, Essie, Sadie, and Tommie.
At the age of 19, Walter Leo worked as a movie projector operator.
He married Peggy Anne Bailey on December 5, 1952, in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. His father, Walter Greene Stancil, served as one of the witnesses at their wedding.
Peggy Anne Bailey was born on February 7, 1934, in Edgecombe County, to John James and Ruth Bellflower Bailey. Prior to her marriage, she worked for Lundy Packing Co.
Walter Leo was a multifaceted individual, serving as a magistrate and also owning and operating his own business, Stancil's TV. He and Peggy were devoted members of Grove Park Baptist Church. In her leisure time, Peggy found enjoyment in puzzles and gardening.
Together, Walter Leo and Peggy had three children:
Walter Leo Stancil passed away at the age of 71 on November 16, 2002, at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He is interred in Grandview Memorial Park in Clinton, North Carolina.
Peggy Anne Bailey Stancil died at the age of 84 on May 2, 2018, in Clinton, North Carolina.
Walter Leo's father, Walter Greene Stancil, died at 86 from cancer on April 14, 1975, in Advance, North Carolina. His mother, Louise W. Stancil, passed away on May 25, 2008, in Four Oaks, North Carolina.
