Philip Ray Hill was born on August 17, 1942, in Johnston County, North Carolina, the fourth child of Tonie and Ludie Edwards Hill, part of the Tempy Ann Branch of the family.
He grew up surrounded by his siblings: Braxton Hill, Ralph Hill, Josephine "Jo" Hill Parrish, Billy Wayne Hill, and Geraldine "Jeri" Hill Lewis. Of his siblings, Jeri is the only one still living.
Philip married Mollie Sue Brewer Hill. Together, they had one daughter, Susan Renee Hill. Renee later married Jeff in 1990, and they had a son, Chase Crocker, who became the apple of Philip's eye.
A long-time and devoted member of New Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church in Kenly, Philip served as a deacon, playing a crucial role in the spiritual life of his congregation. His leadership and guidance helped to strengthen the community, fostering an environment of love, support, and faith.
Philip deeply believed that family was the cornerstone of happiness. From his early childhood, he experienced immense warmth and love from his parents and siblings. He cherished every moment spent with them, whether it was celebrating birthdays, sharing meals, or simply enjoying each other's company. These shared experiences instilled in him a profound respect for family values that he carried throughout his life.
Philip found immense joy in fishing and hunting, often spending weekends immersed in nature and casting lines. These outdoor pursuits not only provided him with a sense of adventure but also allowed him to connect deeply with the natural world, unwind from daily stresses, and bond with friends and family who shared his passion. He took great pride in teaching his grandson, Chase, how to hunt and fish, as they both shared a profound love for the outdoors. A highlight of Philip's day was his every-morning routine at Brewers Grocery and Grill, where he enjoyed a cup of coffee and breakfast around the table with the locals.
Philip Ray Hill passed away at the age of 82 on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, surrounded by his loving family. He was laid to rest in the New Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in Kenly.
