George Preston Hill Jr.

Died April 14, 1988 Durham, NC
Served in Coast Guard for four years from 1942 to 1946. Joined Army in 1947 at Fort Bragg, NC.
Served during Korean War and two tours in Vietnam. He was a tug boat pilot and
licensed harbor pilot. Participated in the testing of the "H" bomb. Retired from
Army in June 1972 after 28 years of service. Received several medals while in
service, including the Army Commendation Medal for Valor and Bronze Star for
Valor.
Husband of Margaret Pope, son of Preston Hill, grandson of Tempy Ann Stancil
Hill.

Garland Willard Brinson

Born April 14, 1938
Served from 1958 to 1979. Attended basic training at Amarillo, Texas. He was
assigned to ground refueling. Nine days after getting married to JoAnn Campbell,
daughter of Mozelle who was the daughter of Josiah, Garland was sent to Goose
Bay, Labrador, for 15 months. Garland made many moves including El Paso, Texas;
Orlando, Fla.; Philippines; Phoenix, Ariz.; Okinawa; Great Falls, Montana and
Shemya, Alaska. Garland retired as a Technical Sergeant.

Served from June 3, 1959, to Aug. 1, 1980. Attended Naval Academy from June 27,
1955, to June 3, 1959. Served as commissioned officer. Was aboard the USS Wallace L. Lind, USS Springfield,
USS Cone and USS Vulcan for about half of commissioned service. Rest of service
was at various shore duty assignments. Earned a Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
In 1942, Harold Lloyd Stancil called nephew Bill "The Annapolis Kid.

James Perry Hales III

Born 1936
Served from 1968 to 1987. James Perry Hales III entered the Army as a private and retired as a full colonel. Served in Korea, Vietnam twice and Saudi Arabia for two years. He graduated from The Infantry Officer's Advanced course in Fort Benning, Ga.; the Command and General Staff course at Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. The Army sent him to Park University in Missouri where he received a degree in history. The Army assigned him to study languages at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., and in Washington, D.C. He studied Vietnamese and Arabic.
His last assignment was at the Pentagon where he served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff as Chief of the Persian Gulf section in the office of Plans and Policy. He retired in 1987. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross on April 28, 1968, the Silver Star on May 9, 1968, and Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in place of a second Silver Star for gallantry on May 26-27, 1968, when he served as Company Commander of Company B, 4th Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division.
James Perry Hales III is the son of Lois and James Perry Hales Jr., grandson of Delphia Pearl Hill and James Perry Hales. He is the husband of Lynn. (Tempy Ann)

Henry C. 'H.C.' Phillips

Served from 1961 to April 1966. Graduated from Duke, commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1961. Sent to Naval flight training at NAS, Pensacola, Fla., trained to fly F-8s.
Went to Beeville Naval Air Station in Beeville, Texas, and then Memphis, Tenn., for maintenance training, followed by Virginia Beach, Va.
and Cecil Field Naval Air Station, Duval County, Fla. He was assigned to two air craft carriers; USS Roosevelt and USS Forrestall, and had
two tours in the Mediterranean Sea.

"Jes" Arnold Hales

Born Nov. 4, 1940
A USAF officer from 1963 to 1984. Served in South East Asia (Vietnam) from 1967 to 1973
(7 TDY tours totaling 865 days). As a B-52 crew commander and instructor pilot, he flew 300 B-52 combat missions from bases in Guam, Okinawa and Thailand. Also served as a
faculty member at the Air Command and Staff College from 1976 to 1980.

Arnold "Arnie" Thomas Stancil

Born March 2, 1943
Served from October 1964 to October 1968. Served as a journalist for the Coast Guard for two years in New York City.
He covered search and rescue stories in the North Atlantic. Then he was sent to the Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC.
His new duties included coordinating PR for the Coast Guard and to review all the media coverage of the Coast Guard.

James Earl Godwin

Died Nov. 16, 2007
Enlisted Oct. 13, 1966, at Nash County. His basic training was at the Great
Lakes Naval training center. He was stationed at Long Beach, Calif. Jim served
aboard the USS Bronstein, a destroyer escort that operated as part of the
Pacific Fleet. USS Bronstein was built at the Avondale Shipyards, Louisiana. USS
Bronstein was launched on 31 Mar 1962 at Charleston, S.C. It carried
16 officers and 180 enlisted men. Jim received an honorable discharge on July 2,
1970.

Born Nov. 22, 1949, in Ocala, Fla.
Served from Nov. 27, 1968 to May 31, 1990. In Vietnam from January 1971 to July 1971.
Earned high scoring marksman in platoon - a 232 expert while at Parris Island.
Used skills to help another soldier pass basic training. Spent six months in
cold training in upstate New York at Fort Drum during his time in the military.

Gregory Hale Stancil

Born Dec. 13, 1949 in Pine Level, NC
Died Jan. 5, 1969 Vietnam; Buried at Oliver-Godwin Cemetery
Enlisted May 1967. Served from Feb. 29, 1968, to Jan. 5, 1969, in Vietnam. A sniper killed him making a deadly head shot. He died Jan. 5, 1969, of wounds received in hostile gunfire at Quang Nam and died hours later. Was Lance Corporal.
Son of Joseph Downing Stancil and Jeanne Godwin Stancil; grandson of Millard Stancil and great-grandson of John Archer and Pinetta Stancil.

George Robert Dennison

Enlisted in U.S. Marine Corps. George joined the Marines and was sent to Vietnam. He was a gunner on a helicopter. George suffered a superficial wound. He attained the rank of sergeant.
Son of Dorothy Jane Stancil Dennison and Robert, grandson of Eva and George Ira Stancil.
