Samuel Roland Parrish Jr., affectionately known as Sammy, was born on June 5, 1947, in Beulah Township in Johnston County, North Carolina. The son of Sam and Ruby Wells Parrish, Sammy grew up surrounded by a large extended family, with many cousins to share his childhood adventures.
He was brother to Linda Gail Parrish Poole, Bobby Carroll Parrish, Elmer Ray Parrish, Faye Parrish Langston, and Kaye Talton.
He attended schools in nearby Smithfield, where he formed the foundation of his education and lifelong friendships.
Military Service and Career

After completing his schooling, Sammy felt the call of duty and joined the Army. His time in the military instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that would shape his future endeavors. Once his enlistment was over, Sammy returned to his roots in North Carolina and embarked on a new journey by opening a car dealership. This venture was a perfect fit for Sammy, who had a natural talent for connecting with people. His warm personality and genuine interest in others made him a beloved figure in the community.
Community and Business
Sammy's car dealership quickly became a local favorite, not just for the great deals he offered, but for the friendly atmosphere he cultivated. Friends and customers alike would often stop by just to chat and catch up with Sammy, who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. His reputation as a fair and honest dealer spread, and he became the go-to car dealer for many in the area.
Retirement and Hobbies
As Sammy approached retirement age, he decided to close his dealership, but his passion for buying, selling, and trading anything with wheels never waned. From golf carts to trucks, Sammy's expertise was broad, and he continued to find joy in helping his friends and neighbors with their automotive needs. His knack for finding new opportunities to assist others endeared him even more to the community.
Personal Life
Sammy was known for his meticulous nature, taking pride in maintaining a neat yard, house, and trucks. His starched khaki shorts became his trademark, a symbol of his attention to detail and personal style.
Family
In his personal life, Sammy experienced the joys and challenges of love and family. He married Judy Juanita Fowler on May 15, 1969, and together they had a daughter, Elizabeth Nannette Faison (Ronnie). Later, Sammy married Sharon Stanley Worley on November 21, 2001, and welcomed her children, Sarah Worley (Yancey Williams) and Paul Worley (Beverly), into his heart.
Facing Illness
When Sammy was diagnosed with cancer, he faced it with the same resilience and acceptance that characterized his approach to life. He continued to live fully, cherishing the moments with his loving family and doting sisters. On June 2, 2018, surrounded by those who loved him, Sammy passed away in Smithfield, North Carolina. He was laid to rest in Oakland Cemetery in Smithfield, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, and community spirit.
Legacy
Sammy's life was a testament to the power of connection and the impact one person can have on a community. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, a true friend and a pillar of his community.
Sammy's daughter Nanette died just four months later on Oct. 24, 2018, in Henderson, North Carolina.
