Mayzell, the daughter of William Arrie Boykin and the granddaughter of Gilford R. Boykin, was born February 27, 1915. She grew up on a farm in O'Neal Township of Johnston County, North Carolina. Her mother passed away before 1920, and her father, William Arrie, later married Bertha around 1922, when Mayzell was 17. Bertha was 13 years younger than William.
Together, Wilbert and Mayzell raised a large and loving family of 10 children: Imogene Hill, Marvelene Hill, William Janel Hill, Cornelia Hill, Karen Hill, Sandra Hill, Linda Lorraine Hill, Sharon Teresa Hill and Debra Ann Hill.
Cornelia Hill, the fourth child, died as an infant in 1943.
