William Darden Hales, brother of Nancy Hales Zartarian and the late J.P. Hales III, died at 76 on Jan. 6, 2023, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born Jan. 26, 1946, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is the son of the late James and Lois Darden Hales. He attended the University of North Carolina after high school. William served in the Air Force for four years, stationed in Germany, starting in 1968. He lived in Tallahassee, Florida, from 1994 to 2020. William enjoyed a career in computer software management. He enjoyed fishing and going to the beach with his family. (Delphia Pearl)
Joseph Franklin Cobb Jr., father of Tommy Franklin Cobb and father- In-law of Kristina Sabricia Weatherman Cobb, died at 72 on Jan. 20, 2023, in Hampton, Virginia. He was born May 21, 1950. He is the son of the late Joseph and Ruby Allen Cobb. He was married to Ann Brock Cobb. Joseph enjoyed fishing, playing baseball and coaching. Sherry Lynn Bunn, mother of Jeff Elliott and Zack Elliott and sister of Susan Bunn Lucas, Sandra Bunn Lucas and Betty Bunn Davis, died at 64 on Feb. 8, 2023, in Middlesex, North Carolina. She was born June 26, 1958, in Wilson, North Carolina. She is the daughter of the late BJ and Velma Hill Bunn. She is the grandmother of Colin Elliott, Amelia Elliott, Abby Elliott and Emma Lynn Elliott. Sherry loved antiques. She is buried at Marsh Swamp OFW Baptist Church Cemetery in Sims, North Carolina. Jimmy Rex Wright, father of Miranda Richards and brother of Valmore Jack Wright, Glenda Wright Collier, Frankie Wright Robbins and Kathy Wright Bennett, died at 63 on Feb. 15, 2023, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born March 31, 1960, in Jacksonville, Florida. He is the son of the late Vernon and Glady Hill Wright and brother of the late Fred Wright and brother-in-law of the late Ernie Bennett. He is the grandfather of Autumn Lane. Jimmy was a licensed optician for more than 30 years in Jacksonville. (William Moses)
Harper Thomas Black, son of Becky Wilson Stancil and stepson of Matthew Watson Stancil, brother of KayCee Stancil and Logan Black and uncle of Lylah Arizpe, died at 21 on March 3, 2023. He was born July 18, 2001. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Ramona Wilson and great-grandmother Lucille Wilson. Matthew is the son of the late Lonnie Pearl Stancil Sr. (Lonnie Alfred)
Ronald “Ron” Glenn Stancil, husband of Fanny Estala Madrid-Moscol Stancil and brother of Linda, died at 63 on March 13, 2023, at home in Amarillo, Texas. He was born Dec. 4, 1959, in Potter, Texas. He is the son of the late Herbert and “Billie” Garnett Parker Stancil and brother of the late Patricia, Beverly and Barbara.
Tonya Yvette Britt West-Odom, mother of Matthew Davis West- Odom and first wife of George Davis West Jr., died at 59 on March 29, 2023, in Willow Springs, North Carolina. She was born March 6, 1964, in Newport News, Virginia. She is the daughter of Thomas Rudolph Britt and Ouida Treadaway Heilman. She was an advocate for all special needs children. (Vernard/Barbara)
George Dallas “DeeDee” Pipkin Jr., father of Samantha Pipkin and George Tyrone Pipkin and brother of Alice Pipkin Parker and the late Shirley Pipkin, died at 83 on March 31, 2023, at VCU Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He was born Oct. 5, 1939, in Norfolk, Virginia. He is the son of the late George and Thelma Stancil Pipkin. He is the grandfather of Danielle Pipkin and great-grandfather of Santana, King, Kila and Giavonna. George served in the Navy for six years, including a stint on the USS Newport News. George was a musician with North Carolina-based Circuit Riders and a priest of the Latter-Day Saints in Logoff, South Carolina. (Elbert/ Thelma)
Nancy Lloyd Williams, widow of Jimmie Lee Williams and mother of Ricky Lee Williams, died at 86 on April 1, 2023, in Durham, North Carolina. She was born Sept. 2, 1936, in Forsyth County. Henry Davis “Dave” Collier Jr., step-father of Kelly Warner and Tommy Warner and second husband of Glenda Ruth Wright Collier, died at 90 on April 10, 2023, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born June 10, 1932, in Tifton, Georgia. He is the son of the late Henry and Ethel Collier. He is the stepgrandfather of Dakohah, Colby, Rebecca and Hunter. He married Glenda on Dec. 5, 1981, in Clay, Florida. Henry served in the Army Signal Corps. (William Moses/Glady)
Melvin Ray Edwards, husband of Ann Stancil Edwards and stepfather of Jackson Stancil and Johnathan Stancil, died at 95 on May 23, 2023, at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, North Carolina. He was born April 6, 1928. He is the son of the late Joe and Lois Edwards. He is the stepgrandfather of K.J. Stancil, Luke Stancil and Avery Stancil. Melvin served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Melvin served on the Princeton Town Board, was a member of the Princeton Lions Club, a charter member of the Princeton Fire Department, and served on the Johnston Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. Steven Dale Narron Sr., father of Steven Narron Jr., Bryan Narron and Dustin Narron, died at 56 on June 10, 2023, in Kenly, North Carolina. He was born Sept. 29, 1966, in Johnston County, North Carolina. He is the son of Bruce Narron and the late Julia Dunn Narron and brother of the late Chuck Narron. He is the grandfather of Paisley, Eli and Julia. Steven worked for years in construction, known as a skilled carpenter. He is buried in New Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church in Kenly. (Delia/ Annie)
William Manley Creech, husband of Donna Jackson Creech and father of Lee Creech, died at 80 on June 26, 2023, in Virginia Beach. He was born Nov. 4, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia. He is the son of the late J.W. and Olympia Creech and father of the late Matthew Jackson Creech. He was a Realtor. He is buried at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk, Virginia. (Lillian)
Nathan Alan Stancil, son of Stephen Jerome Stancil, brother of Chad Stancil and nephew of Gary Rudolph Stancil, died at 35 on June 26, 2023, in Clifton Forge, Virginia. Nathan was born Nov. 15, 1987, in Low Moor, Virginia. He enjoyed cooking for several area restaurants. (James Oscar/Doc)
Garland Willard Brinson Jr., father of Brittany Brinson, Kelsey Brinson Birch and Adam Brinson, died at 62 on July 10, 2023, in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is the son of Jo Ann Campbell Brinson and the late Garland. He was born May 10, 1961. Garland worked for Newport News Shipbuilding. (Carrie Mozelle)
Dale Robert Leffler, husband of Edith Marie Creech Leffler, father of Michael Brian Leffler and Terry Michele Leffler and brother of Barbara Leffler Ferrebee, died at 82 on July 15, 2023, in Spotsylvania, Virginia. He was born May 27, 1941, in Pine Grove, Pennsylvania. He is the son of Irvin and Evelyn Leffler and brother of the late Sally Leffler Miller. He is the grandfather of Sarah Leffler and Megan Leffler and great-grandfather of Claritie Leffler. Dale served in the Navy for four years. Then he worked for IBM for 33 years before retiring. He served as a deacon at Spotswood Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He is buried in Culpeper National Cemetery in Virginia. (Lillian/J.M.)
Wayne Elwin Sidelinger, father of Steve Sidelinger, Michael Sidelinger, Lyndon Sidelinger and Nancy Sidelinger Herring, died at 95 on July 23, 2023, in Wilson, North Carolina. He was born Feb. 19, 1928, in Monson, Maine. He is the son of the late Claude and Hazel Grover Sidelinger, husband of the late Eloise Hill Sidelinger, brother of the late Max and grandfather of the late Sara Elizabeth. He is the grandfather of Richard, Beck, Lauren, Sarah Catherine, Emilie, Carolyn, Troy and Victoria and great-grandfather of Walker and Kenai. He served in the Marine Corps from 1945 until being honorably discharged in 1948. Days after marrying Eloise on Sept. 30, 1950, he was recalled to active duty and stationed at Cherry Point, North Carolina, until 1952. He was active in many organizations, including Wilson Jaycees and the Wilson County Antique Dealers Association. (Millard)
Janet Moore Winkler, wife of Edwin Winkler Jr., mother of Bonnie Marsh Martin, Michael Brooks, Randolph Marsh, Sara Harrell and sister of Donna Moore Padgett, died at 83 on Aug. 6, 2023, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. She was born March 10, 1940, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She is the daughter of the late Randolph and Norma Stancil Moore. She is the grandmother of David Kanoff, Michael Martin, Benjamin Martin, Jeffrey Brooks, Michael Brooks, Graham Brooks, Catherin Brooks, Emily Brooks, Amanda Perkins, Patrick Marsh, Cody Marsh, Brandon Marsh, Levi Harrell and Nathan Harrell. She has 13 greatgrandchildren. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She is buried in Fort Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida. (DeLanie)
